Zero waste

A closer look at solid shampoos: how to choose them and use them

Zero waste

Are you familiar with solid shampoos? As the name suggests, these are shampoos that come in a hard, solid form – also known as shampoo bars. They're an excellent alternative to conventional shampoos in plastic bottles, which are a source of waste in your bathroom. In France, five such shampoos are sold every second. That's 476,000 plastic bottles every day! Every year, 174 million shampoos are sold – and that's just in France! (Source: Planetoscope.) The figures are staggering – and even more so when you take into account the fact that many shampoo bottles end up in our oceans. And once they're there, they'll take around 500 years to break down...

The good news is that there are eco-friendly solutions to replace regular shampoos that will really care for your hair: solid shampoos!

By January 2020, all the solid shampoos sold by Lamazuna had prevented 1,151,625 plastic bottles from being used. It's a figure we're proud of, as it means that every day, we're helping to reduce plastic pollution caused by these items. And let's not forget that plastic bottles also contain petrochemicals, which are really not good for your health...

So today, we want to take a closer look at solid shampoos. Switching to these zero-waste solid cosmetics could be life-changing for you – and your hair!

Why use a solid shampoo?

Zero waste

You haven't adopted any zero-waste habits yet? Then why not start gently, with a solid shampoo? Like most people, you've probably accumulated a good few plastic bottles in your bathroom. But enough is enough, right? A solid shampoo makes an excellent first step towards a zero-waste lifestyle. It enables you to cut down on plastic bottles and avoid harmful ingredients in your hair. Why? Because it's made with natural ingredients! We use nothing but natural and plant-derived ingredients in our solid shampoos, regardless of the hair type they're designed for. They're also vegan and – it goes without saying – not tested on animals!

Plus, if we look beyond the shampoo itself and focus on the packaging, again, it's zero waste. Our shampoo boxes are made from recyclable cardboard. The cherry on the cake? Each shampoo lasts twice as long as a regular one, so you won't have to buy shampoo as often as before! It's zero waste, yes, but so much more!

We offer shampoos made with essential oils and others that are free of essential oils. All of them are made with naturally derived ingredients, to help protect the environment.

You may not know it, but many regular shampoos contain petrochemical ingredients that pollute our planet. Among them, you'll find sulphates, which are used in many of the shampoos available today. Once you've rinsed your hair, these ingredients go down the drain, but afterwards they're not always completely eliminated by wastewater treatment plants. The result? They end up in our rivers, then in our oceans...

Plus, in order to make their liquid shampoos, regular brands use anything from 60 to 90% water in their formulas! This isn't the case with solid shampoos. In fact, it isn't the case with solid cosmetics in general, because no – or very little – water is used to make them!

Much less water is used to produce solid shampoos, so thousands of litres of water are saved!

Lamazuna Shampoos

Just like all Lamazuna products, our solid shampoos are what we call "eco-affordable". It's a word we like to use to say that a product is eco-friendly and saves you money. That's right: not only are our solid shampoos gentle on the environment; they're also gentle on your wallet! How? Because they're twice as efficient as a standard shampoo! And because they're twice as efficient, they last twice as long. And because they last twice as long, you'll need to buy one twice less often. So you'll spend half as much money!

It's true that our solid shampoos are a little more expensive than regular shampoos (although having said that, there are plenty of regular shampoos out there that are more expensive too!). But in the long term, they do work out cheaper.

Christmas Shampoo Lamazuna

A "healthy" shampoo made with naturally derived ingredients

Our solid shampoo is eco-friendly – which is good news for the environment. It saves you money – which is good news for your finances. Now let's look at whether it's good for your health too!

A Lamazuna solid shampoo is more natural for you and your body. In the world of shampoos, it's the "healthy option"! One of our top priorities has always been to offer you eco-friendly alternatives that are also better for your health, every day. By using 100% naturally derived ingredients, we're able to offer shampoos that are good for you, and gentle on both your hair and scalp.

Regardless of your hair type, you'll find a shampoo that's made with nothing but ingredients from nature. We've used plant-based glycerine and gentle surfactants derived from coconut oil. We've also used (in some shampoos) white and green clay, and even argan oil. All these natural ingredients will not harm your skin or your health.

Practical and convenient!

If you thought we'd already listed all the benefits of solid shampoos, think again! We haven't yet mentioned how practical and convenient they are! A solid shampoo can sit on the side of your bathtub, or you can keep it on a self-draining soap dish in your shower – just like a bar of soap. If you're travelling, it's perfect! No need to worry about leaking bottles. Because solid cosmetics will not – and cannot – leak!

If you want to take your solid shampoo with you somewhere, simply put it in an empty jar (such as one that was used for a face cream or yoghurt), then put a small cloth on top and hold it in place with an elastic band. If your shampoo is still a bit wet, you could slip it inside a face mitt. Always air it out between each use so it won't go mushy!

Choosing and using a solid shampoo

Look for natural ingredients

By now you've understood that if you want a good solid shampoo, it should be made with ingredients from Mother Nature. After all, Nature knows best. It's perfectly possible to make a shampoo with natural ingredients – and not those that are produced through petrochemical processes. So it makes perfect sense to go for the natural option, every time. That way, you can look after your hair while helping to look after the planet!

Make sure you check the ingredients in your solid shampoo. You want it to be made with certified-organic ingredients and free of pesticides and petrochemicals. The more "good" ingredients a product contains, the better it will be! If the product meets these criteria – and Lamazuna zero-waste solid shampoos certainly do – then you can be sure that it's a product you can trust.

Choose a shampoo that suits your hair type

Different people have different hair types. There are those who are lucky enough to have naturally glossy locks, and those who are not so lucky, and have to deal with oily or very dry hair. So it's important that you choose a shampoo that works with the kind of hair you have.

Lamazuna Shampoos

At Lamazuna, we've got shampoos for everyone! Whatever your hair type, there's a solid shampoo that's tailored to your needs. Plus, our shampoos aren't just for adults – there are some that children can use too.

Incredibly simple to use!

We're not going to bore you with long and complicated instructions, as there really is no need. In fact all you need to know is that a solid shampoo is so easy to use, you can't go wrong! All you have to do is wet your hair and rub the shampoo over it. Within seconds, it will transform into a rich, creamy lather. Then massage your scalp – just as you would with a regular shampoo – and rinse. That's all there is to it. Like we said, it's incredibly simple!

Just one little word of warning: avoid contact with your eyes and mucous membranes, or it may sting! And of course, if you are allergic to certain ingredients, be extra careful and avoid using a shampoo that contains them.

Lasts a long time and easy to store

A solid shampoo isn't just easy to use; it's easy to store too! At home, you can simply keep it in your shower or on the edge of your bath. You can place it on a soap dish, just like a soap, and let it air dry. And because it's naturally antibacterial, it can't get "dirty"! Another tip for keeping it in your zero-waste bathroom is to place it in a mesh bag that you hang up in your shower or by your bathtub. It will dry even faster that way!

What about pregnant women and children?

As we said, some of our shampoos contain essential oils, which means that they shouldn't be used by young children or pregnant women. But we do have three shampoos that are made without essential oils, so they're perfectly suitable for expectant mums and little ones!

The first is our delicious chocolate shampoo. Its fragrance comes from the certified-organic, Fair Trade cocoa powder that we've used to make it, and is absolutely mouthwatering! This shampoo is perfectly safe for pregnant women and young children with normal hair.

The second is our shampoo for oily hair with a wild grasses scent. You can enjoy it at any time in your life, including during pregnancy!

Finally, pregnant women with dry hair can use our coconut & vanilla shampoo, which is also free of essential oils!

Many pregnant women find that their hair changes during pregnancy, due to hormones. But this shouldn't stop you from finding a Lamazuna shampoo you'll love!
