I have questions about the bioplastic Oriculi
The name "Oriculi" was invented by Lamazuna for this brilliant sustainable accessory, which cleans the ears and lasts a lifetime – so there's no need to use cotton buds (Q-tips) ever again!
We wanted to offer you a new improved version of our Oriculi, which is one of our most popular products!
After many months of research and development, we can now proudly present our new Oriculi, which is not only made from 100% biosourced bioplastic, it's also made in France!
Yes, our Oriculi is made entirely in France!
Our bioplastic is 100% derived from castor oil. The castor oil plants are grown sustainably in India, and the beans are processed in France. The oil then goes to our plastic maker, who's based about 150 miles from our head office. We worked on the 3D form with him, and he made the plastic injection mould on his premises. This type of machinery represents an investment of around €30,000 – which is 20% higher than the same machinery made in China. We made a choice, and this choice does have a financial cost, but it was important for us to minimize our carbon footprint and support French craftsmanship.
The bioplastic used to make our Oriculi is derived from castor oil. The castor oil plant has long been used traditionally in India. It grows in semi-arid conditions and needs little water.
Our bioplastic is 100% derived from castor oil, and the castor oil plants are grown sustainably in India. The supplier of our raw material has implemented a sustainable cultivation programme for the production of castor beans, which aims to support over 2,700 farmers.

The word "bioplastic" can refer to:
● a biosourced (also called biobased) plastic, which is derived from a renewable resource (particularly a plant material) > this was used for our new Oriculi,
● a biodegradable plastic that will break down into substances that are harmless for the environment at the end of its life.
At present, there are:
- bioplastics that are 1 to 100% biobased, BUT NOT biodegradable,
- bioplastics that are made from fossil fuels BUT ARE biodegradable,
- bioplastics that are partly biobased and partly made from fossil fuels AND biodegradable,
- bioplastics that are 100% percent derived from renewable resources AND biodegradable.
-At first, we wanted to find a 100% biosourced and biodegradable bioplastic. It's worth pointing out that bioplastics are relatively new materials and many suppliers are still very much working on their development. The materials that we tested and met these two criteria (100% biosourced AND biodegradable) did not meet our technical requirements. Moreover, biodegradability tests are often carried out on very fine sections of bioplastics (about 0.1 mm), so they don't actually guarantee the biodegradability of larger items, such as our Oriculi.
-We therefore decided to focus on a 100% biobased, durable bioplastic, so that we could offer you an Oriculi that was safe to use and could last a lifetime. If for any reason it should break (unlikely, but accidents do happen!), then it can go back into the circular economy and be recycled and reused. That way, there's zero waste!
Even though our Oriculi is made from a durable material, there's always a (very slim!) chance it might break one day. For us, it was important to guarantee that it would last a lifetime – which is why it comes with a lifetime guarantee! There's no need to keep proof of purchase to activate the guarantee either. You'll find more information in our Recycling section.
Whether you bought your bioplastic Oriculi from our website, an independent retailer or an organic store, we guarantee that we will replace it with exactly the same model if it breaks. All you have to do is download the pre-paid label, stick it on an envelope, and send your Oriculi back to us along with your address. We'll send you back a new one!
From the moment we began designing our new Oriculi, we took into account its end of life. After all, it is intended to be both a sustainable and durable item! If you should end up breaking it by accident, you can send it back to us. When we have a large enough quantity of material to recycle, we have two choices:
- either we send it back to the supplier of our raw material, who can re-use it;
- or we recycle it with a partner who will shred the broken/damaged items into small pieces that can be used to make new Oriculis.
Generally speaking, when plastic is recycled, the material is shredded, and its mechanical properties are weakened. When it's injected into a mould, some "new" raw material will also be injected to improve its technical performance. This will be the case for the Oriculi, which is another reason why we hope you'll take good care of it so you can keep using it for life!
Our Oriculis come in different colours, so it's perfectly possible to have a different one for each member of the family and not get them mixed up !
It's also possible for everyone in the family to use the same Oriculi, as long as it is cleaned correctly after use. Simply wash it with soap and warm wzter then dry it well.
